Akkeshi is a seaside town on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Surrounded by marshes that provide local peat, the Akkeshi Distillery sits so close to the sea there’s no way you can’t taste it in their otherwise distinctively sweet and fruity Whiskies.

Inspired by an ancient Asian calendar that divides the year into 24 solar seasons, this Akkeshi whiskey is the 5th edition. Ritto translates to ‘Winter begins’ and the artisanal label depicts the traditional Chitose candy children enjoy during that time. Aged in Mizunara oak, Sherry, and Pinot Noir casks, this fruity Whisky with notes of chocolate, citrus, white pepper, and smoky peat might remind you of some Islay expressions, but it’s distinctly unique.
